Hello Gail, that's a tough one because it sounds like you probably either sit up straight or lean forward a little while doing your work, am I correct? Few chairs will support your upper back unless you're actually leaning back in the chair, but there are a few things you can look into.

I would go with either a high back task chair, a drafting stool, or an ergonomic saddle seat stool. these may provide more comfort and support than a standard low or mid-back office chair.

Also, from personal experience I have found that upper back discomfort is best alleviated by taking many breaks from your work and standing up to move around. Most pain like you described is caused by staying in a hunched-over position for an extended period of time. Walking around and doing some arm and back stretches throughout the day may provide more relief for you than any chair will.

If you do decide to buy a new chair or stool check out the ergonomic chairs category on ergodirectusa.com - you'll find various models like I described above and you can compare them to see which might work best.

Hope this helps!

Good blog post. I don't believe many people realise the benefits of choosing a good task chair. If you work long hours at your desk, taking time to choose your chair is time well spent.
